Teeth Whitening Q&A

by Sergey Zemlyansky, DMD

What options do I have for teeth whitening?

At Harborside Dental, you can get in-office treatments or take-home trays to whiten your smile. Store-bought options include whitening toothpaste and over-the-counter whitening kits. In-office teeth whitening is the quickest, most dramatic treatment, followed by take-home trays. After that, store-bought trays provide more effective lightening than whitening toothpaste.

After an hour in the dentist’s chair, in-office treatments whiten teeth up to eight shades lighter, more than any other option. While treatments like whitening toothpastes target surface-level stains, in-office treatments treat deeper layers for a long-lasting effect.

Dr. Sergey also offers teeth-whitening trays at Harborside Dental. Unlike over-the-counter whitening trays, these trays are customized to fit your specific teeth for a more consistent whitening effect. They also lighten teeth up to six shades lighter, whereas store-bought trays only lighten your teeth up to four shades lighter. For both, it takes about seven days to start noticing results.

Remember that none of these teeth whitening options can whiten crowns, veneers, or fillings. If you’ve had any of those teeth treatments, especially on the visible front surface of your teeth, you may not be a good candidate for teeth whitening.

How does in-office teeth whitening work?

During the treatment, you get to lie back comfortably in the dentist’s chair. Dr. Sergey covers your lips and gums to expose only your teeth to the treatment; then he applies whitening gel to each tooth. Using a special light, Dr. Sergey breaks up stains deep within the tooth’s enamel. He applies the gel and light treatment 3-4 more times to achieve the desired effect.

How do I keep my teeth white after treatment?

Some foods, drinks, and lifestyle habits stain your teeth over time. The aging process also creates some natural discoloration. That’s what makes teeth whitening such a great option. It’s an easy way to recreate that youthful smile.

After your in-office whitening treatment, you can prolong the whitening effect by avoiding:

  • Wine
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Soda
  • Smoking

Dr. Sergey can also provide touch-up trays to lighten your teeth when they naturally start to fade. That way, you can prolong your white smile and fix any discoloration from your morning coffee along the way.
