Root Canals Q&A

by Sergey Zemlyansky, DMD

What is a root canal?

The purpose of a root canal is to treat and save an infected tooth instead of pulling it. During the treatment, Dr. Sergey drills into the tooth, cleans out all the pulp inside the tooth canal, and fills in the space with filling material. The tissues and nerves inside a mature tooth are not required, so removing them is unproblematic.

Sometimes tooth decay or a fracture allows bacteria to penetrate inside the tooth, causing infection. Symptoms of infection include:

  • Severe toothache
  • Swelling and inflammation
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold

If you suspect an infected tooth, swift action may help you save it. It’s important to call your dentist right away to discuss your options.

Are root canal fillings successful?

Root canals have up to a 95% success rate of saving your tooth. When done correctly, the treatment is meant to last a lifetime. The best way to ensure your root canal is successful is to see a dentist with proper experience and expertise, like Dr. Sergey.

Should I have a root canal or an extraction?

Saving your original teeth is always a better option than removing them. An artificial tooth will never look, feel, or perform the same as a natural tooth.

Root canals are also a quicker treatment than extractions and the bridges or dental implants that follow. Those restoration methods require much more involved treatments and potential follow-up adjustments.

Extraction is only required when:

  • Your tooth isn’t viable anymore
  • Your tooth is too weak to repair
  • The fracture extends below the gum line

Early intervention is the best way to prevent further damage that leads to extraction.

Who performs root canals?

You can see your regular dentist or make an appointment with an endodontist for a root canal. Dr. Sergey performs successful root canals regularly, so there’s no need to leave the comfort and familiarity of your regular dentist’s office. If you do end up with an incredibly complex issue, Dr. Sergey can refer you to a specialist.
