Dental Implants Q&A

by Sergey Zemlyansky, DMD

What are dental implants?

Dental implants consist of a titanium root attached to the jawbone, a post that extends outside the gums, and a crown over the top that resembles a natural tooth. Since dental implants are designed to be permanent and look exactly like your original teeth, they are fast becoming the replacement of choice for missing teeth.

Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

If you have proper jawbone density beneath your missing tooth to attach the implant to, you’re likely a good candidate for dental implants. Your dentist can take X-rays or a CT scan to determine if you have an adequate bone structure for implant placement. You should also have healthy gum tissue and be free of conditions that affect bone healing.

How are dental implants installed?

Dental implants are installed in increments. First, Dr. Sergey places the titanium implant in the bone socket during surgery. You’ll wait 6-12 weeks while the bone heals around the post, securing it in place.

After that, he attaches a post to the implant. Finally, he takes impressions of the surrounding teeth to design the final replacement tooth (or crown). Once the crown is ready, he makes any necessary adjustments to size and color and attaches it to the post.

What are the benefits of dental implants over other tooth replacement methods?

Dental implants are the closest replica of original teeth, and because they fuse directly to the bone, they also feel and function like your natural teeth. They won’t ever slip or make noise like dentures, and they provide superior aesthetic value to boost your smile and confidence.

While bridges and dentures require follow-ups and replacements, dental implants are a permanent solution for missing teeth. They don’t require any special treatment like bridges and dentures either. You can brush, floss, and rinse them like any other teeth, and the materials they’re made from won’t decay like regular teeth can.

Finally, dental implants help protect the integrity of the jawbone. The implant encourages the bone tissue in the jaw to grow, while dentures and bridges can allow your jawbone to deteriorate. If dental implants sound like the right choice for you, set up an evaluation at Harborside Dental.
